He died from Japanese army gunfire during the Aunae market demonstration in Byeongcheon, Cheonan, in 1919.
Gim Sang-heon (1893–1919), from Bokdahoe-ri, Suсsin-myeon, Cheonan, joined the crowd led by Jo In-won and Yu Gwan-sun at the Aunae market demonstration on April 1, 1919, raising the Taegeukgi and shouting for Korean independence after Jo read the declaration of independence aloud. When the demonstration intensified, Japanese military police opened fire and he died at the scene. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriot's Medal, in 1991.
