Kim Sun-jong, from Hado-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju (courtesy name Ikseong, pen name Gobong, Gimhae Kim clan), organized the secret society Hyeogu Dongmaeng in March 1930 to spread socialist ideas and enlighten the public, taking charge of convening its meetings, for which he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. He also ran a night school with O Mun-gyu in Hado-ri that was linked to the leaders of the 1932 Jeju haenyeo (women divers) uprising, leading to his arrest as a suspected organizer; he was convicted under the Peace Preservation Law by the Daegu Appellate Court in June 1933. After liberation he served as head of the Gujwa-eup People's Committee, and in 2005 he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation.
