Kim Jong-pil (金鍾泌, 1926-2018) was a Korean military officer and politician, with the art name Unjeong (雲庭). A graduate of the Korea Military Academy, he took part in the May 16 military coup of 1961 and, as the first director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, founded the agency.
In the process of concluding the ROK-Japan Basic Treaty in 1965, he led the negotiations over Japan's claims settlement through the so-called "Kim-Ohira Memo." He led the founding of the Democratic Republican Party, served as the 11th and 31st Prime Minister, and was elected to the National Assembly nine times.
Involved in major junctures of modern political history such as the three-party merger of 1990 and the DJP coalition of 1997, he formed one axis of the "Era of the Three Kims."
