Kim Gap-sun was orphaned young but amassed great wealth, becoming the leading magnate of South Chungcheong Province with vast landholdings around Gongju, Nonsan, Asan, and Daejeon; by the late 1930s roughly two-thirds of downtown Daejeon is said to have belonged to him. After the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War he served as an officer of several wartime-mobilization organizations, including the Korea League for the Total Mobilization of National Spirit and the Federation of the Total Mobilization of National Power. His eldest son, Kim Jong-seok, a Government-General judge, was also listed as a pro-Japanese collaborator, and father and son both appear in the Dictionary of Pro-Japanese Collaborators.
