Born in 1926 in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, Gim Yong-deok organized the Mudeung Reading Society while a student at Gwangju Normal School in 1943. Named after Mount Mudeung, Gwangju's guardian mountain, the society used its reading meetings to instill a traditional national historical outlook and independence ideology among students, and its members pledged to rise up as an action unit in support of an expected Allied landing.
When the organization was discovered, he was arrested and detained for four months and eleven days. The government posthumously awarded him a presidential citation as a National Foundation medal in 2017.
