Gwon Cheol-sin (1736-1801) was a late-Joseon scholar from Andong, with courtesy name Gimyeong and pen name Nogam. He is regarded as a leading figure of the Seongho school descending from Yi Ik, and Jeong Yak-yong, Yi Seung-hun and Yi Byeok are said to have studied with him.
He joined the Catholic faith in 1784 at Yi Byeok's urging and was arrested in the 1801 Sinyu persecution, dying in prison at 66. Some regard him as a martyr while other records say he recanted under interrogation.
A leading Seongho-school scholar, he criticized orthodox Zhu Xi learning, took interest in Wang Yangming thought and interpreted the classics freely.
He joined in 1784 but, unlike his younger brother Gwon Il-sin, did not preach directly and devoted himself to study and faith at home. He was arrested in the 1801 Sinyu persecution and died in prison.
His younger brother Gwon Il-sin was a zealous preacher in the early Catholic community.
