Yi Beom-pal was the eldest son of Baron Yi Geon-ha, a former minister of the late Joseon court. When his father died in 1913, he inherited the baronial title, and demonstrated his pro-Japanese stance by personally inscribing the phrase "the Emperor's grace is vast and great" for publication in the Maeil Sinbo newspaper.
For this record he was included in a 2002 list of 708 pro-Japanese collaborators, a 2006 government list of 106 pro-Japanese offenders, and the 2008 roster of those slated for inclusion in the Dictionary of Pro-Japanese Collaborators. After his death, the title passed to his eldest son, Yi Wan-jong.
