He led a market-day independence demonstration outside Daegu's South Gate in 1919 and was sentenced to six months in prison.
Yi Deok-ju (1897–1970), a farmer from Namsan-dong, Daegu, disguised himself as a merchant and, at around 4:30 p.m. on March 10, 1919, unfurled the Taegeukgi flag at the market outside Daegu's South Gate, leading the crowd in shouts of "Long live Korean independence." He was arrested and sentenced to ten months by the Daegu District Court on April 18 for violating the Security Law, reduced to six months on appeal on May 31. He died on August 15, 1970.
