Lee Gang-uk (courtesy name Seongman, pen name Sinwa), of Sugok-dong, Imdong-myeon, Andong, led the March 1st Movement demonstration in the Imdong area, during which a police substation was destroyed, and was sentenced to six years in prison. On March 15, 1919, he met with seven others, including Yu Yeon-seong, Yu Gyo-hui, and Park Jae-sik, at Pyeonhang Market to plan a demonstration for March 21. When about 500 people gathered at Pyeonhang that day, the group led the crowd in shouting for independence, and after Japanese police opened fire, they destroyed the police substation and its records. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment by the Daegu District Court in April 1920.
