Yi Geon-ha (1835–1913) passed the state examination in 1864 and rose through the bureaucracy to Minister of Rites (1892) and Minister of the Interior (1899). He initially opposed Japanese encroachment, protesting the 1904 wasteland concession demand and criticizing the ministers who signed the 1905 protectorate treaty. After the 1910 annexation, however, he accepted a baron title and a stipend bond from the Japanese government and was awarded the annexation commemorative medal in 1912, a title later inherited by his grandson Yi Wan-jong — actions for which he is listed as a pro-Japanese collaborator.
