Yi Hak-sun was a righteous scholar from Gongju who, after Japan's 1910 annexation of Korea, firmly refused the colonial government's "bestowed money" meant to co-opt Korean gentry, and was imprisoned by the Japanese military police as a result. Released briefly on medical parole, he took his own life in protest rather than submit, and his son Yi Nae-su likewise received honors as an independence patriot. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal, in 1962.
