Lee Hwa-sam (also known as Yeong-hwan or Yeong-sin) served as rear-army commander under Yi Dae-geuk's righteous army in Jangseong, South Jeolla. After Gi Sam-yeon's unit was defeated in 1907, he was appointed rear commander when Yi Dae-geuk reorganized the force in March 1908, and went on to fight the Japanese in Muan, Jangseong, Yeonggwang, and Gochang. When Yi Dae-geuk was killed in action in April 1909, Lee took over command, and he himself was killed by Japanese gunfire in battle in January 1910.
