Yi Jae-gon was active during the late Korean Empire and Japanese colonial period. He was involved in the forced abdication of Emperor Gojong and the conclusion of the Japan-Korea New Treaty (the Seven-Article Treaty of 1907), serving as Minister of Education (1907-1909) in the cabinet of Yi Wan-yong, and he is counted among the 'Seven Traitors of 1907.'
Pro-Japanese activities He received the title of viscount and served as an advisor to the Central Council. For these activities he is listed as a pro-Japanese collaborator by the government's Commission on Pro-Japanese Collaborator Activities and/or the Dictionary of Pro-Japanese Biography compiled by the Center for Historical Truth and Justice. The independence activist Yi Gwan-yong was his son.
