Life & career
Rev. Lee Man-jip was the pastor of Namseongjeong Church in Daegu. On March 3, 1919, he received a copy of the Korean Declaration of Independence from Lee Gap-seong, who had come from Seoul, and resolved to launch a demonstration in Daegu as well.
Together with Kim Tae-ryeon, Kim Yeong-seo and others, he planned the uprising and, on the afternoon of March 8, addressed several hundred people gathered at the market outside Daegu's West Gate, leading cries for independence — an event regarded as the first March 1st Movement demonstration in the Yeongnam region. He was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison.
