Yi Neung-hwa was a scholar of Korean religion, folklore, and women's history during the late Korean Empire and Japanese colonial period, authoring pioneering works such as "A Comprehensive History of Korean Buddhism" (1918) and "A Study of Korean Shamanism" (1929). He served for about 15 years from 1922 as a member of the Government-General's Joseonsa Pyeonsuhoe (Committee for the Compilation of Korean History), a colonial body whose activities have led Korean truth commissions and the Dictionary of Pro-Japanese Biographies to list him among collaborators with Japanese rule.
