Inspired by Yeo Un-hyeong, he organized a reading society and was imprisoned for his activities.
Yi Ran (1925–2011), from Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, helped keep alive the anti-Japanese spirit of Chuncheon Middle School's secret student society Sangnokhoe after Japanese police broke it up in 1938, forming a reading society in its place. Independence activist Yeo Un-hyeong, a friend of his father's, frequently visited Chuncheon, and through him the students learned of the Provisional Government in Shanghai and world affairs. The group was exposed after a mock street clash with Japanese students on March 10, 1941, and Yi served a year at Seodaemun Prison before being sentenced to one to three years for violating the Peace Preservation Law. He received the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriot's Medal, in 1990, and died on November 9, 2011.
