Yi Su-cheol planned and led the 1919 Yeongsan manifestation in Changnyeong and was sentenced to six months in prison.
Born in Yeongsan-myeon, Changnyeong County, Gyeongsangnam-do, he graduated from Yeongsan Common School and was serving as a clerk in Jangma-myeon in 1919 when he organized a 23-member suicide squad with fellow activists and led the March 13 Yeongsan manifestation. The squad members signed a pledge that anyone who retreated would forfeit his life, then raised the Korean flag and proclaimed independence; the Yeongsan protest is regarded as the first March 1st Movement demonstration in Gyeongsangnam-do.
