Jang Sun-ryong (1255-1297) is honored as the founder of the Deoksu Jang clan. His early name is given as Samga, and he is described as a man of the Yuan realm originally of Hoehoe (Muslim Central/West Asian) background, often called a naturalized Uyghur. He is said to have been sent to Goryeo as a member of the retinue (kheshig) of Princess Jeguk, consort of King Chungnyeol, was appointed a lower officer, rose to general, and changed his name. He later served as vice commissioner and assistant commissioner of the Royal Secretariat and rose to Cheomui Chamni, dying in office. Sources differ on the exact ethnic origin, and anecdotes record rivalry with other royal favorites over wealth and influence.
