Jang Yu (1587-1638; some sources give 1588), pen names Gyegok and Muksso, was enfeoffed Lord Sinpung. He passed the civil examination in 1609 and joined the 1623 Injo Restoration, receiving a merit title. He served as Grand Academician and Minister of Personnel, War and Works, and was named Right State Councillor in 1637 but resigned repeatedly over his mother's death. During the Manchu invasion he argued with Choe Myeong-gil for peace with the Qing. Renowned for his prose and counted among the four great writers of mid-Joseon, he also knew astronomy, geography, medicine and calligraphy; works such as Gyegok-jip and Gyegok Mandil survive. His daughter became Queen Inseon, consort of Hyojong.
