Ji Baek-ho is a legendary figure said to have been the headman of Jinji-chon (later Bonpi-bu), one of the six villages of early Silla, and is venerated as the progenitor of the Jeong surname lineage.
According to tradition, he was one of the six village chiefs who took part in enthroning Park Hyeokgeose, and in 32 CE, during the reign of King Yuri, he was granted the surname Jeong and took Gyeongju as his clan seat, from which the Dongnae Jeong clan later branched off. Genealogical records differ from the official History of the Three Kingdoms on some details — the Gyeongju Jeong clan genealogy holds that the surname was granted not to Ji Baek-ho himself but to his fourth-generation descendant — reflecting discrepancies between the standard historical record and later clan genealogies over the timing of his legendary descent and the granting of the surname. Later tradition holds that he was posthumously given the title Munhwa under King Beopheung and ennobled as King Gammun under King Muyeol.
Various Jeong clans, including those seated at Gyeongju and Dongnae, revere him as their common progenitor.
