Jeong Tae-hwa (1602-1673) of the Dongnae Jeong clan, grandson of Chief State Councillor Jeong Chang-yeon, distinguished himself by rallying scattered troops during the 1636 Manchu invasion. He went on to serve an extraordinary five separate terms as Chief State Councillor under Kings Hyojong and Hyeonjong, skillfully mediating court disputes including the ritual controversies of the era.
Known for his caution, he submitted resignation petitions 37 times during his career. His younger brother and his son both also reached the rank of State Councillor, making the family one of the era's leading political dynasties.
