Of the Dongnae Jeong clan, he passed the higher civil service examination in 1492 (23rd year of King Seongjong) and entered officialdom. After serving as Minister of War and Inspector-General, he rose to Chief State Councillor during King Jungjong's reign and led state affairs as a minister for a long period.
He directed the response to the Three Ports Japanese Uprising (Sampo Waeran), and during the Third Literati Purge (Gimyo Sahwa) of 1519, though critical of the radical reforms of Jo Gwang-jo's faction, he worked to save them when they came to harm and was consequently demoted. He was later exiled to Gimhae after conflict with Kim An-ro, but was reinstated.
His posthumous title was Munik (文翼). He established the foundation on which the Dongnae Jeong clan would produce ministers over many generations.
His grandson Jeong Yu-gil (鄭惟吉) rose to Left State Councillor, and the Dongnae Jeong clan produced many state councillors.
