Elder statesman of the late Joseon period who served as Chief State Councillor across the reigns from King Sunjo to King Gojong

Jeong Won-yong was a civil official of the late Joseon period. After passing the higher civil service examination in 1802, he served four kings, Sunjo, Heonjong, Cheoljong, and Gojong, and after serving as Right and Left State Councillor he rose to Chief State Councillor. Over his long career, he is regarded as an elder statesman who coordinated the affairs of state as a whole.
He worked to rectify the corruption of the Three Administrations (samjeong) and to reorganize state finances, and in his later years he was involved in Regent Heungseon Daewongun's reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace. He left the diary Gyeongsan Illok (經山日錄), covering a record of some 70 years from 1802 until his death.

His son Jeong Gi-se served as Minister of Personnel, and his grandson Jeong Beom-jo served as Right State Councillor.
