Ju Jam (朱潛, 1194–1260) is the founder of the Sinan Ju clan in Korea. His pen name is given as Cheonggye, and the petition by Ju Seok-myeon recorded in the Annals of King Gojong calls him Lord Cheongmi (淸渼公). According to that petition, he was the third son of Zhu Ju (朱鉅) and a grandson of Zhu Ye (朱埜), Zhu Xi's second son, which makes him Zhu Xi's great-grandson.
He is said to have served in Song as a Hanlin academician and an academician of the Imperial Library. Fleeing the Mongol invasions, he crossed the sea to Naju (Geumseong). He brought his son Ju Yeo-gyeong and seven scholar-disciples: Seop Gong-je, Jo Chang, Jin Jo-sun, Ju Se-hyeon, Yu Eung-gyu, Du Haeng-su and Do Seong-ha. He then lived in hiding at Neungseong in Hwasun, and is also said to have changed his name to Ju Jeok-deok (朱積德) to evade Yuan searches.
Sources give different years for his flight. The Gojong petition gives the imsin year, the first year of King Gangjong of Goryeo (1212). The Namdo Ilbo and the Siheung and Gimhae local culture encyclopedias give 1224. His place of refuge is also given either as Yongdam in Jinan (Shinailbo) or as Sinan village in Jucheon-myeon, Jinan (Namdo Ilbo). He is enshrined at Jucheon Seowon in Jinan and was formerly honored at Hoedeoksa within the Juja Shrine in Neungju, Hwasun.
According to clan tradition, Ju Jam fled the Mongol invasions at the end of Song and entered Naju (Geumseong) with his son Ju Yeo-gyeong and seven scholar-disciples. He then lived in hiding at Neungseong in Hwasun and is said to have changed his name to Ju Jeok-deok when the Yuan searched for Song refugees. The clan's long-used name, the Neungseong Ju clan, came from this place of settlement.
The location of his grave could not be confirmed. He is enshrined at Jucheon Seowon in Jinan (North Jeolla Cultural Heritage Material No. 142).
The entire Sinan Ju clan honors him as its founder in Korea. His son Ju Yeo-gyeong is said to have come to Goryeo with him.
