Ju Si-gyeong (1876-1914) was a linguist who studied Korean and Hangul scientifically during the enlightenment era and early colonial period. His books, including Daehan Gugeo Munbeop (1906), Gugeo Munjeon Eumhak (1908) and Gugeo Munbeop (1910), sought to establish a theoretical basis for grammar, and he ran language courses and taught at several schools. He argued for allowing all consonants as final sounds and for preserving word stems in spelling; his students later led the Korean Language Society, and the 1933 Hangul Orthography largely follows his ideas. He died suddenly in 1914 and was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Presidential Medal) in 1980. He is listed as a member of the Sangju Ju clan.
