Life & career
Kim Si-seup (金時習, 1435-1493) was a scholar, writer, and monk of the early Joseon period, with the courtesy name Yeolgyeong (悅卿), the art name Maewoldang (梅月堂), and the dharma name Seoljam (雪岑). His clan lineage was Gangneung.
Renowned as a child prodigy from a young age, he abandoned officialdom in protest against King Sejo's usurpation of the throne and lived a wandering, reclusive life, and is counted as one of the Six Surviving Subjects (Saengyuksin).
Staying on Mount Geumo in Gyeongju, he wrote Geumo Sinhwa (New Tales of the Golden Turtle), regarded as Korea's first collection of Chinese-language fiction, and left the poetry and prose collection Maewoldang Jip, among others.
