A member of the Soron faction, Kim Sang-cheol's father Kim Si-hyeok had served as Pandon-yeongbusa. He worked to mediate the factional strife between the Noron and Soron factions, and although he was once stripped of office over an issue involving his son, he was later reinstated by King Jeongjo.
