Life & career

His courtesy name was Sajeong, his pen names Dogye and Songok, and his posthumous title Munheon. Gifted in letters from childhood, at age 13 he wrote the Geumsujeong-gi and was called a prodigy.

After placing first in the special civil service examination in 1723 (3rd year of King Gyeongjong), he held a series of prestigious posts such as saseo, jeongeon, bugyori, and eunggyo. He then served as magistrate of Bupyeong, censor-general (daesagan), and governor of Gyeongsang Province, and in 1755 (31st year of King Yeongjo) rose to Minister of Personnel.

Skilled in literature, painting, and calligraphy, he toured the Gwandong region and left the Gwandong sipgyeongcheop, an album depicting its real scenery.
