Go Jo-gi (高兆基, 1085-1157) was a mid-Goryeo civil official of the Jeju Go clan. His earlier name was Go Dang-yu, his pen name Gyerim and his posthumous title Mungyeong. He is traditionally a son of Go Yu of Tamna (Wikipedia says son or grandson). The Goryeosa biography records that he was upright, learned in the classics and histories, and gifted at five-character verse.
He passed the examination in 1107 (2nd year of Yejong) and served as magistrate of Nam-ju. Under Injong, as an inspector he impeached Bong U and was demoted to a Vice Director of the Ministry of Works; returning as a censor he petitioned to expel Yi Ja-gyeom's faction and was moved to Director of the Ministry of Rites. Under Uijong he became Jeongdang-munhak in 1148 and, as chief examiner, selected 25 graduates including Ryu Jeong-gyeon.
In 1149 he reached Jungseo-sirang-pyeongjangsa, was impeached for pandering to Kim Jon-jung and demoted to Left Vice Director, then restored. He served as head of the Ministry of War in 1150 and as military commander of the Central Army and the Northwest Frontier in 1151, and died in 1157. He is counted as the first man from Jeju to join the ranks of chief ministers.
After passing in 1107 and serving as magistrate of Nam-ju, he became an inspector under Injong. He was demoted after impeaching Bong U and, once back, petitioned against Yi Ja-gyeom's faction.
In 1148 he became Jeongdang-munhak and chief examiner, selecting 25 graduates, and in 1149 Jungseo-sirang-pyeongjangsa. Impeached for pandering to Kim Jon-jung, he was briefly demoted but soon returned and handled war ministry and military matters.
The tomb in Ara-dong is considered the earliest Jeju tomb with a known occupant. It is a square tomb with stone posts instead of an earthen enclosure, and descendants hold a rite every September. Another man of the same house, Go Deuk-jong, became Mayor of Hanseong in early Joseon.
His tomb is at 2464 Ara-dong, Jeju City, designated a Jeju Monument on 13 July 1977.
Descendants maintain the tomb and hold a rite every September.
