Im Deuk-ui (1558-1612) was a mid-Joseon military officer of the Pyeongtaek Im clan, with courtesy name Jabang. For helping put down Yi Mong-hak's 1596 rebellion in Chungcheong during the Imjin War, he was named a third-class Cheongnan merit subject in 1604.
He is recorded as having served as Chungcheong Naval Deputy Commander and Commander of the Gyeongsang Right Army. As a regional commander in the unsettled years between the first and second Japanese invasions, he took part in suppressing the revolt and in defense; his honor was among the Seonmu, Hoseong and Cheongnan merit subject lists compiled in 1604.
His tomb is in Hongseong, South Chungcheong (Korea Heritage Service material), Wikipedia lists a Jeongchungsa shrine as a related entry (its location was not confirmed here), and a portrait of him is held by the Korea Heritage Service. Together with Im Gyeong-eop he is often cited when the clan's tradition of loyalty is discussed.
In 1596 Yi Mong-hak raised a rebellion in Chungcheong against the background of unrest caused by the Imjin War, but it was suppressed before long. Im Deuk-ui is recorded among those who distinguished themselves in putting it down. The revolt is known to have caused a major political stir because it overlapped with volunteer-army activity.
In 1604 King Seonjo awarded Seonmu, Hoseong and Cheongnan merit honors for deeds in the Imjin War. Im Deuk-ui was named a third-class Cheongnan merit subject, a separate list from the Seonmu honors given to figures such as Yi Sun-sin.
His tomb in Hongseong and the portrait held by the Korea Heritage Service preserve his memory. The portrait is released under KOGL Type 1.
His tomb is in Hongseong, South Chungcheong (photographed in Korea Heritage Service material). Jeongchungsa is listed as a related entry on Wikipedia but its location was not confirmed.
