A historian and journalist, Mun Il-pyeong awakened national consciousness through his research and writings on Korean history.
Born in 1888 in Uiju, North Pyongan Province, of the Nampyeong Mun clan and known by the pen name Hoam, he studied in Japan starting in 1905, returned to teach, then went back to Japan in 1911 to study politics at Waseda University. He left his studies unfinished and moved to China, where he worked for a Chinese newspaper. In the 1930s he led the Joseonhak (Korean Studies) Movement alongside Jeong In-bo and An Jae-hong, devoting himself to research on national culture, and died in 1939 at the age of fifty-two.
