The Nampyeong Mun Clan and Its Founder, Mun Da-seong

The Nampyeong Mun clan (南平 文氏), with its ancestral seat in Nampyeong, Naju, South Jeolla Province, accounts for the great majority of the Korean Mun surname. Its founder is Mun Da-seong (文多省), who by legend emerged from a stone chest in a rock (Munam, 文巖) at Nampyeong in Naju; he is said to have been a military official who aided Taejo of Goryeo, rising to Samjungdaegwang and Byeoksang merit subject and being enfeoffed as Nampyeong-baek (南平伯).

Mid-Founder Mun Ik and the Growth of the House

Because the generations from Mun Da-seong are distant, the actual lineage is continued from Mun Ik (文翼) of the reign of King Sukjong of Goryeo as the 1st-generation mid-founder. In the generation of Mun Ik's three sons — Mun Gong-in, Mun Gong-won, and Mun Gong-yu — the family rose greatly: Mun Gong-yu became Founder of Nampyeong-hyeon, Mun Gong-in a Pyeongjangsa, and Mun Gong-won an enshrined merit subject. Later Mun Ik-jeom, who introduced cotton, came from this house, and in modern times there is the 19th President Moon Jae-in.

The founder's era has been corrected by the central clan association to the Later Three Kingdoms period.
