Moon Jae-in (b. 1953) served as the 19th President of South Korea. Born in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, to parents who had fled south during the Korean War, he was expelled from university in 1975 after leading protests against the Yushin dictatorship, and learned he had passed the bar exam while detained on a martial-law charge in 1980.
Although he graduated second in his class from the Judicial Research and Training Institute, his record of student activism kept him from being appointed a judge, so he became a lawyer instead, running a joint law practice with Roh Moo-hyun in Busan from 1982 as a human-rights attorney.
He served as senior presidential secretary for civil affairs under the Roh Moo-hyun administration in 2003 and as its last chief of staff in 2005. After a term in the National Assembly, he was elected the 19th President in 2017 and served until 2022.
