Life & career

Yun Gwan (1935-2022) was a South Korean jurist of the Haenam Yun clan, introduced by Wikipedia as a twelfth-generation descendant of Gosan Yun Seon-do. He was born in Haenam and passed the tenth higher civil service examination in the judicial section in 1958. The Goryeo general Yun Gwan of the same name belongs to the Papyeong Yun and is a different man.

After passing he served as a navy legal officer and in 1965 became a judge of the Gwangju District Court. He was a Supreme Court research judge in 1972, head of the Seoul District Court Northern Branch in 1981 and senior presiding judge of the Seoul High Court in 1982. He then led the Cheongju District Court in 1983 and the Jeonju District Court in 1984, and after serving as a Supreme Court Justice became the ninth chairman of the National Election Commission.

He served as the twelfth Chief Justice from 27 September 1993 to 22 September 1999 and died of a chronic illness on 14 November 2022 at 87. The Wikipedia article does not describe specific achievements during his tenure, so only his career is summarized here. Private details are not covered and the entry is limited to his public career. For the clan see the Haenam Yun page.
