Yun Sin-dal (尹莘達) is the founding ancestor of the Papyeong Yun clan. Aiding King Taejo Wang Geon, he helped unify the Later Three Kingdoms and distinguished himself in the founding of Goryeo, rising to Merit Subject Painted on the Wall of the Three Han (三韓壁上功臣). He is classified as belonging to the Paeseo (浿西) regional magnate lineage.
According to legend, an old woman named Yun On (尹媼) took in and raised a child that emerged from a golden chest floating up in the Dragon Pool (Yongyeon, 龍淵) at the foot of Mount Papyeong; because there was a "Yun (尹)" mark on the child's palm, he came to bear the surname Yun. This, however, appears to be a legend embellishing the founding ancestor; in reality it is more likely that he received the Yun surname bestowed by Wang Geon as a founding merit subject. His fourth-generation descendant was Yun Gwan, who subjugated the Jurchen and built the Nine Fortresses of the Northeast, and the Papyeong Yun clan takes Yun Gwan as its restoring ancestor.
