The Papyeong Yun clan (坡平 尹氏) has its ancestral seat in Paju (former Papyeong), Gyeonggi Province. Its founder Yun Sin-dal (尹莘達) was a Samhan Byeoksang merit subject who helped Taejo Wang Geon found Goryeo, and the legend of the golden chest at Yongyeon pond on Papyeong Mountain is passed down. His 4th-generation descendant was Yun Gwan, who subdued the Jurchen and built the Nine Fortresses of the Northeast, and the Papyeong Yun clan takes Yun Gwan as its mid-founder. King Sejo, honoring the hometown of Queen Jeonghui (a Papyeong Yun), raised Wonpyeong Dohobu to 'Paju-mok,' and the 'Pa' of 'Paju' comes from Papyeong.
Since Munsukgong Yun Gwan of Goryeo it produced many notable figures, and in King Chungseon's time it was one of the 15 houses (jaesangjijong) permitted to marry into the royal clan. In Joseon, along with the Cheongju Han and Yeoheung Min clans, it produced many queens: Queen Jeonghui, Queen Jeonghyeon, Queen Janggyeong, and Queen Munjeong all came from this house. In 2022, Yun Seok-yeol, a 35th-generation descendant of the Jangnyeonggong-pa, was elected the 20th President.
From Yun Gwan's seven sons it split into dozens of branches, but today about 80% of the Papyeong Yun clan belongs to the Sojeonggong-pa (昭靖公派) and the Pandogong-pa (版圖公派), so heavily concentrated in these two branches. The Namwonbaek-pa, Hamanbaek-pa, and others were also merged into the Papyeong Yun clan. In the 2000 Statistics Korea survey it numbered about 713,947, with high distribution density in the Chungcheong and Gyeongsang regions.
