About the 안동 고씨 clan

A small Ko seat with its home in Andong, North Gyeongsang, said to descend from the Jeju Ko; Dugok Ko Eung-cheok is named as its founder. In the 2015 Census the 안동 고씨 clan numbered about 2,279 people, one of Korea's major surnames and clans. Even among people surnamed 고, a different clan seat (bon-gwan, 안동) means a different lineage. The Andong Ko Seat

The Andong Ko (安東 高氏) is a seat of the Ko surname with its home in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province. Korean Wikipedia gives a 2015 census figure of 2,279 and names Ko Eung-cheok as founder and Ko Eul-na of Tamna as the ancestor of origin. It is very small beside the Jeju Ko or the Jangheung Ko.

Relation to the Jeju Ko

Korean Wikipedia says briefly that the founder was Ko Eung-cheok, of the Jeju Ko, who served as a county magistrate in Joseon, and that the seat was later unified under Jeju Ko. A wiki-style document instead says that Ko Mal-ro, crown prince of King Ko Ja-gyeon of Tamna, is the line of the Jeju Ko, and that Ko Mal-ro's 23rd-generation descendant Ko Eung-seop split off as the Andong Ko. The founder's name therefore differs by source, and it is not confirmed whether Eung-seop and Eung-cheok are the same person. A handwritten family record called Andong Ko-ssi Gabo, with the Samseonghyeol myth, is read by one author as showing that the Andong Ko came from the Jeju Ko, but that is one writer's interpretation without independent checking. In sum, sources agree that the Andong Ko belongs to the Jeju Ko lineage, but the exact founder and date of the split differ.

Ko Eung-cheok and Haepyeong

The best-known figure is Ko Eung-cheok (1531-1605). The Digital Gumi Culture Encyclopedia lists his seat as Andong, courtesy name Jwamyeong, pen names Dugok and Chwibyeong, and links him to the Haepyeong and Seonsan area of present-day Gumi. He passed the civil examination in 1561 and served as instructor at Hamheung, Magistrate of Punggi, Magistrate of Hoedeok and Governor of Gyeongju, and 28 sijo poems rendering the Great Learning appear in his Dugok-jip. In 2019 his mummy was reported found while a grave was being moved at the Andong Ko family burial ground at Geumsan-ri, Haepyeong-myeon, Gumi.

Limits of the Sources

Very little is available. The Wikipedia entry is a few lines and its reference link is broken. Branch names, clan association, villages, generation names and other figures were not confirmed. The Andong Ko is separate from the Andong Kim. Please check the Andong Ko register, the clan association and the Jeju Ko central association.

On the Ko Surname

The Jeju Ko is the largest Ko seat, and the Samseonghyeol myth of Ko Eul-na, Yang Eul-na and Bu Eul-na rising from Moheunghyeol on Hallasan is told as its founding legend. Some sources place the Andong Ko in that lineage; the wider Ko story continues on the Jeju Ko page.

Distribution

One essay on the family record reads the Andong Ko as spread around Hwaseo in Sangju, Jeomchon in Mungyeong and Haepyeong in Seonsan, but gives no evidence. Only the location of Ko Eung-cheok's family burial ground in Haepyeong-myeon, Gumi, is confirmed by news reports.

Clan Association and Registers

The clan association's name and contact and the register publication years were not confirmed. If you are of the Andong Ko, ask your elders for the register and contact the Jeju Ko central association.
