Gang Dal-ju was born in Naju and raised in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province. When Sim Nam-il raised a righteous army in Hampyeong in November 1907, Gang joined as a quartermaster commander, drafting proclamations with vanguard commander Gang Mu-gyeong and fighting Japanese forces in Gangjin, Neungju, and Haenam.
In 1909 he coordinated with An Gyu-hong's militia near Mt. Seokho, and after his unit was scattered following the Battle of Seokjeong that August, he fled with Sim Nam-il before being captured. He was sentenced to five years in prison for insurrection and was tortured, leaving him permanently disabled in one ankle.
After his release he lived in seclusion in Yeongam around the time of the 1919 independence movement and died there in 1960. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990.
