Gang Geun-ho, a native of Jeongpyeong in South Hamgyong Province, graduated from the Sinheung Military Academy and joined Kim Jwa-jin's Bukno Gunjeongseo (Northern Route Military Government Office) in Manchuria, serving as an instructor and squad leader training young officers. In 1920 he commanded the 1st company at the Battle of Cheongsanri.
After the Gando Massacre he retreated with his unit into Russian territory and survived the 1921 Free City Incident, later continuing to train independence fighters as an instructor at the Irkutsk Koryo Revolutionary Military School. After liberation he returned to Korea in 1947, was commissioned through the 8th class of the Korea Military Academy in 1949, and commanded the 113th Regiment of the 103rd Division during the Korean War.
He received the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990, following an earlier 1977 merit decoration, and is buried in the Patriots' Section of Daejeon National Cemetery.
He is interred in the Patriots' Section of Daejeon National Cemetery.
He married Lee Jeong-hui, a great-granddaughter of independence activist Lee Si-yeong, and they had a son, Gang Gwi-cheol, and a daughter, Gang Jeong-hwa.
