From around 1933 he read socialist literature and grew increasingly critical of Japanese rule, and in July 1934 he helped organize a secret society in Hyeopjae-ri with Jang Yong-jin, Hong Gyeong-ok and others, taking charge of its youth division and leading study sessions and recruitment.
He was arrested by Japanese police and sentenced to one year and six months in prison for violating the Peace Preservation Law by the Gwangju District Court's Mokpo branch in April 1937. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1993.
His daughter, Gang Hye-seon, later served as head of the Jeju chapter of the Heritage of Korean Independence, continuing to honor her father's legacy.
