Gang Won-ho was born in 1882 in Gangdong (North Pyongan Province). In December 1908 he joined the righteous army of Hwang Sun-il, operating with about thirty comrades in Yangju County, Gyeonggi Province, and from early 1909 he served under righteous army leader Gang Gi-dong, who appointed him left-flank commander.
In May 1909 he stood watch while Gang Gi-dong's unit executed three men — Yi Il-nam, Kim Yun-heung and No Su-won — suspected of being Japanese military police informants in Pocheon, and that July he confronted and then burned the house of another suspected informant, Jeon Wan-jun, near Yangju. He was eventually captured and, in July 1910, sentenced to death by the Gyeongseong District Court; on appeal that September the sentence was commuted to fifteen years' imprisonment. The government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1995.
