Life & career

Gim Gyeong-seo worked as a schoolteacher educating Korean children in Jiandao (Gando), Manchuria, until he was killed by Japanese troops in 1920 during the Gyeongsin Massacre (also known as the Gando Massacre).

After suffering defeats at the battles of Fengwudong and Cheongsanli, the Japanese army used the staged Hunchun Incident of October 1920 as a pretext to send its 19th and 20th Divisions into Jiandao, carrying out a scorched-earth campaign against the Korean community there. Schools and churches were burned and thousands of Korean civilians — including teachers and religious figures — were massacred; Gim is recorded among those killed in this retaliatory campaign.
