Kim Gyo-heon, the second leader of the Daejonggyo faith, was born in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. A late-Joseon civil official who passed the state examination in 1885 and rose to Rector of the National Academy, he joined the Independence Club in 1898.
In 1916 he succeeded founder Na Cheol as the second Grand Patriarch of Daejonggyo, institutionalizing the faith and writing works such as Sindan Minsa and Sindan Silgi. In December 1918 he rallied Daejonggyo followers to organize the Bukro Military Government (Bungno Gunjeongseo), which contributed to the 1920 victory at the Battle of Cheongsanri, and in 1919 he signed the Musin Declaration of Independence in Jilin.
After Japanese punitive raids massacred many Daejonggyo followers in retaliation, he handed the leadership to Yun Se-bok on November 22, 1923, and died of illness on December 25 of the same year.
