He attempted an independence demonstration in front of the Government-General building in 1937 and was sentenced to a year in prison.
Gim Hong-sik (1908–?), from Hoeyang, Gangwon Province, joined the new religious movement Samdogyo, founded by Ham Yong-hwan, in March 1935. On March 9, 1937 he was preparing, with fellow Samdogyo members, to stage a mass independence rally in front of the Government-General building when the plan was discovered and he was arrested.
