On October 7, 1918, Buddhist monks led by Kim Yeon-il and roughly 700 local residents staged the Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Uprising in Seogwipo, Jeju — the island's first anti-Japanese movement, predating the March First Movement by a year. Organizers had spent six months beforehand forming military-style units, drafting manifestos, and preparing clubs, flags, and weapons before launching the uprising after dawn prayers.
Kim Myeong-don took part in the Beopjeongsa uprising, helping rally local residents to join, and was arrested and sentenced to one year in prison.
