Life & career
He organized the Revolutionary Corps and Assassination Corps and died in a shootout with Japanese police following the 1923 Jongno Police Station bombing.
Gim Sang-ok (1889–1923), from Hyoje-dong, Seoul, used the pen names Hanji and Uieom. Just after the March First Movement, in 1919, he formed the underground anti-Japanese Revolutionary Corps and published its clandestine newspaper, then fled to Shanghai, where he associated with Kim Gu and Jo So-ang and joined the Righteous Brotherhood (Uiyeoldan). On January 12, 1923, he threw a bomb at Jongno Police Station, wounding Japanese police and newspaper staff, and ten days later, on January 22, he was surrounded by roughly 400 Japanese police and troops in Hyoje-dong. After a three-hour gun battle in which he killed fifteen of his pursuers, he took his own life with his last bullet. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Grand Order, in 1962.
