He raised a righteous army in the Honam region and died fighting Japanese forces near Naju.
Gim Tae-won (1870–1908), from Naju, South Jeolla Province, belonged to the Gyeongju Gim clan, used the pen name Jukbong, and was also known as Gim Jun or Chambong Gim. He was the elder brother of fellow militia leader Gim Yul and had held the minor court post of chambong. After a disillusioning stint with the Donghak Peasant Army in 1894, he returned home, and in 1906 he and his brother raised a righteous army around Gochang and Yeonggwang. The following year he joined Gi Sam-yeon's Honam Righteous Army Alliance as vanguard commander, fighting around Naju and Hampyeong. In January 1908 he defeated a Japanese cavalry unit under a commander named Yoshida at Mudongsan in Dongbok, killing Yoshida, and after further fighting at Jangseong in May he was killed in action at the Battle of Eodeungsan in Gwangju. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal, in 1962.
