Gwon O-seol (1897-1930) was an independence activist from Andong, North Gyeongsang, who served as a central executive committee member and head secretary of the Korean Communist Youth League.
Imprisoned over the March 1st Movement, he organized the Pungsan Tenant Farmers' Association and others; arrested while preparing the June 10, 1926 Manse Movement, he was sentenced to seven years and died in Seodaemun Prison in 1930 about a hundred days before his release.
Sources give his home as Gail village in Pungsan or as Gagok-ri in Pungcheon, so his birthplace needs checking. Around 1920 he joined the Andong chapter of the Joseon Labor Mutual Aid Society and the Andong Youth Association and organized the Pungsan Tenant Farmers' Association.
He became a standing executive of the Joseon Labor Federation in 1924 and, as head secretary of the Communist Youth League, led preparations for the June 10 Manse Movement before his arrest.
He died in Seodaemun Prison on April 17, 1930; the after-effects of torture are often mentioned. The specific state decoration was not confirmed here.
Records say the Japanese authorities forced an unmarked flat burial; the present tomb was not confirmed.
