Life & career

Sin Myeon (申㴐, ?-1467) was an early Joseon official, a son of Chief State Councillor Sin Suk-ju and Lady Yun of the Musong Yun clan. His clan seat was Goryeong; his grandfather was Sin Jang, and his maternal great-grandfather was Yun Hoe, a scholar-official of King Sejong's reign. Some records write his name as 申沔. Wikipedia gives his birth year as 1438, but the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture lists it as unknown.

He entered office through the protected appointment system, was enrolled in 1455 as a third-grade minor Jwaik merit subject, and served in posts such as director of the Office of Dyeing and in the Royal Genealogy Office. He was also sent to visit his father when Sin Suk-ju was campaigning as commissioner in Hamgil Province. He became a Censor in 1461, Sixth Royal Secretary in 1463 and then Fourth Royal Secretary, and in 1466 Chief Royal Secretary, serving close to King Sejo. That year he and his father, together with Jeong Chang-son and others, supervised the preliminary and advanced civil examinations.

In 1467 he became governor of Hamgil Province, and that fifth month Yi Si-ae rose in rebellion. The court appointed him to the Office of Ministers-without-Portfolio and sent Eo Se-gong to replace him as governor, but before Eo arrived the rebels surrounded the provincial office; even Sin Suk-ju was then suspected of collusion with the rebels. Knowing he could not escape, Sin Myeon climbed the wall with bow and arrows, shot down four men, and when his arrows ran out broke his bow and fought on until he was killed.

He was posthumously named Left Assistant State Councillor and Minister of Personnel, and later, when his son Sin Yong-gae became Left State Councillor, Chief State Councillor. In 1471 he was added to the third grade of the Jeokgae merit subjects, but this was revoked after objections from the censors. His wife was a daughter of Jeong Ho. His elder brother Sin Ju was a son-in-law of Han Myeong-hoe, his younger brothers were Sin Chan, Sin Jeong, Sin Jun, Sin Bu, Sin Hyeong and Sin Pil, and a half-sister became King Sejo's consort Lady Sin.

Grave

His grave was first made at Gosan-ri, Yangju (now Gosan-dong, Uijeongbu), and in 2004 it was reportedly moved with his wife's grave to Gumuncheon-ri, Hyangnam-eup, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
