Life & career

Shin Suk-ju (申叔舟) was an early-Joseon statesman and scholar, and the founder of the Munchung-gong branch (文忠公派) of the Goryeong Shin clan. As a scholar of the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon) he assisted King Sejong in creating and studying Hangul, was fluent in several foreign languages, and after a mission to Japan wrote the Haedong Jegukgi (海東諸國記). He later rose to Chief State Councillor (Yeonguijeong). His pen name was Bohanjae (保閑齋).
